Ruto Launches Naivasha–Kisumu SGR Phase 2B, Signaling New Push to Unlock Rift Valley and Lake Region Economies
Today marked a defining moment in Kenya’s infrastructure journey after William Samoei Ruto officially unveiled a commemorative plaque and tightened the symbolic nut to signal the commencement of the Naivasha–Kisumu Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) Phase 2B project.
The ceremony, held along the proposed railway corridor linking Naivasha to Kisumu, marked a significant step in the government’s efforts to expand modern rail infrastructure and strengthen regional trade. The new phase is expected to extend the SGR line deeper into western Kenya, opening up new opportunities for commerce, tourism, and industrial growth.
Speaking during the event, President Ruto described the project as a strategic investment that goes beyond transport. He said the railway will play a critical role in reducing the cost of doing business, improving the movement of goods, and connecting farmers and manufacturers in the Great Rift Valley and the Lake Region to both domestic and international markets.
The project is also expected to stimulate economic activity across several counties along the corridor, particularly in the Great Rift Valley and the Lake Region, which have long been seen as key drivers of Kenya’s agricultural and industrial potential. Improved rail connectivity to Kenya’s western region is expected to enhance trade links with neighbouring countries in the East African Community.
Government officials and local leaders who attended the launch described the milestone as a turning point for regional development, noting that the railway will not only improve transport but also create thousands of jobs during construction and operation.
As work begins on the Naivasha–Kisumu SGR Phase 2B, the government says the project represents a bold commitment to modern infrastructure and a long-term vision of inclusive economic growth across the country.
