New Campaign Launched to Tackle Kenya’s “Diaper Gap” Affecting Persons with Disabilities

The National Chairperson of the National Inclusive Dignity Diapers Initiative (NIDDI), Benson Isaboboke, has called for urgent national action to address what he described as a “silent crisis” affecting thousands of vulnerable families across Kenya.
Speaking during the launch of the initiative, Isaboboke highlighted the growing challenge of diaper need among children and adults living with disabilities, noting that the issue continues to undermine dignity, health, and equality.
The campaign builds on efforts by the Sight of Relief Organization, which in 2023 introduced the Dignity Diapers Campaign to respond to the unmet needs of families struggling to afford basic hygiene essentials. According to Isaboboke, many caregivers are often forced to make difficult choices between purchasing food and buying diapers.
He explained that for individuals living with conditions such as Cerebral Palsy and other forms of incontinence, diapers are not optional but a medical necessity critical to maintaining health and dignity.
Despite their importance, diapers remain largely excluded from Kenya’s public health system and social protection programs, leaving many families exposed to preventable infections, stigma, and financial strain.
Isaboboke emphasized that the “diaper gap” is not only a health concern but also a human rights and social justice issue that requires coordinated national intervention.
Through NIDDI, stakeholders are now pushing for a multi-pronged approach that includes the establishment of a national diaper bank system, increased donations from corporate and community partners, policy reforms to classify diapers as essential health commodities, and structured distribution channels targeting vulnerable populations.
The initiative has set an ambitious target of mobilizing one million bales of diapers annually to support at least 100,000 people living with disabilities and other at-risk groups across the country.
Isaboboke called on policymakers, the private sector, development partners, and communities to work together in closing the gap, stressing that restoring dignity must be a shared responsibility.
He underscored that no child should miss school, no adult should live in isolation, and no caregiver should struggle in silence due to lack of basic necessities.
The campaign has also received recognition from Softdream Baby for its role in supporting inclusive dignity efforts.
The initiative now seeks to galvanize nationwide support to ensure that dignity is upheld for all, particularly the most vulnerable members of society.
