National Liberal Party Seeks Ukambani Breakthrough as Wiper, NARC Face Deregistration Threat
The National Liberal Party of Kenya is intensifying efforts to expand its influence in the Ukambani region as regulatory pressure mounts on established political parties accused of failing to meet constitutional compliance standards.
Party strategists say the changing political environment presents an opportunity to strengthen grassroots structures and position the party as a viable alternative in a region traditionally dominated by long-standing political heavyweights.
At the center of the compliance concerns are the Wiper Patriotic Front, led by Kalonzo Musyoka, and the National Rainbow Coalition associated with former Charity Ngilu. Both parties have been flagged over possible deregistration after reportedly failing to demonstrate a national presence as required by Kenya’s Constitution.
A recent audit by the Office of the Auditor‑General, led by Nancy Gathungu, highlighted gaps in compliance among several political parties. According to the report, some parties had not established functional offices in all of Kenya’s 47 counties, while others lacked evidence of sustained political activity outside their traditional strongholds.
The findings singled out Wiper and NARC for allegedly lacking adequate county structures, raising concerns about whether they meet the constitutional requirement for political parties to maintain a national outlook.
The audit also cited the United Democratic Party and the Mabadiliko Party of Kenya for similar shortcomings. In several counties, auditors reportedly found no physical party offices, while in others, there was limited evidence of active engagement with members or communities.
Political analysts say the revelations could prompt closer scrutiny by the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties, which is mandated to ensure that political parties comply with legal and constitutional requirements.
If the Registrar moves to enforce the recommendations contained in the audit report, the decision could significantly reshape the political landscape in Ukambani, potentially opening space for emerging parties like the National Liberal Party to gain ground ahead of the next electoral cycle.
