Government Spokesperson Hon Isaac Mwaura Clarifies Karura Tree Nursery Renovation, Dismisses Claims of Forest Destruction
By Irene
The Government has moved to clarify concerns surrounding activities at the Karura Tree Nursery, assuring the public that the project does not involve any new clearing of land within Karura Forest.
Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura stated that the land earmarked for the exercise measures only three acres and is part of the existing Tree Biotechnology Programme Trust (TBPT) nursery that had previously been set aside for tree seedling production.
Mwaura explained that the ongoing work is purely a renovation of facilities that had not been maintained for some time, dismissing reports suggesting that the government was opening up new sections of the forest.
The renovated site will support the planting of two million seedlings to boost the country’s ambitious 15 Billion Tree Campaign, which aims to increase forest cover across the country. According to the government, one of the main challenges facing the programme has been the shortage of sufficient seedlings to meet the national target.
The spokesperson further noted that officers and volunteers from the National Youth Service will be accommodated in containers within the existing ranger facilities in the area, adding that no additional land will be excised for the project. He urged the public to ignore what he termed as fake news and sensational reporting regarding the matter, reiterating the government’s commitment to protecting forests while expanding tree planting efforts nationwide.
