MD Kenya Railways Hosts Narok Leaders as Consultations Begin for Naivasha–Kisumu–Malaba SGR Project
By Irene
Philip Mainga, the Managing Director of Kenya Railways, today hosted leaders from Narok County for a consultative meeting on the planned construction of the Naivasha–Kisumu–Malaba Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) line.
The stakeholder engagement forum, held at the Mara Frontier Hotel, is part of an ongoing public participation process being conducted by Kenya Railways in collaboration with the National Land Commission ahead of the multi-billion-shilling infrastructure project.
During the meeting, Mainga briefed participants that the 269-kilometre Phase 2B SGR line will traverse five counties — Narok, Bomet, Kericho, Nyamira, and Kisumu — significantly improving connectivity across the western corridor.
He explained that the project will include the construction of 115 railway bridges spanning a combined 43 kilometres, eight tunnels, 460 culverts, six intermediate stations, and a terminal station in Kisumu County. The development will also feature an Inland Container Depot in Kisumu to support cargo handling and regional trade.
Narok County Deputy Governor Koech Tamalinye welcomed the project, expressing appreciation to the national government for advancing the railway extension. He affirmed that residents are ready to support the initiative and benefit from its economic opportunities.
The railway project extends the existing Mombasa–Naivasha Standard Gauge Railway, completed in 2019, and is expected to strengthen logistics, reduce transport costs, and enhance trade links between Kenya and the wider East African region.
Officials from the National Land Commission outlined the land acquisition and compensation process, noting that it will begin soon and will be conducted in accordance with the law to ensure fairness and transparency.
Narok North Member of County Assembly Douglas Masikonde told the meeting that local residents are eager for construction to begin, with many young people anticipating employment opportunities. He added that the project is expected to stimulate local commerce by creating new business opportunities and boosting revenue.
The meeting was attended by Kenya Railways board members, Narok County Commissioner Rueben Lotiatia, representatives from the offices of the area Senator and Member of Parliament, and members of the Narok County Assembly.
