Kirinyaga Woman Rep Jane Njeri Maina Reveals Warning from Edwin Sifuna on Integrity in Parliament

Kirinyaga Woman Representative Jane Njeri Maina has disclosed a past conversation with Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna in which he cautioned her about the difficult choices legislators face when balancing integrity and personal gain.

Speaking during an interview with a local television station in February 2026, Njeri said she does not know Sifuna well and has only interacted with him on a few occasions. However, she recalled one conversation that left a lasting impression on her view of parliamentary service.

According to Njeri, Sifuna told her that Parliament presents two stark paths for lawmakers: remaining silent in exchange for personal benefits or standing firm in defense of citizens’ interests at the expense of financial gain.

“I don’t know Sifuna very well, and we’ve had very minimal interactions, but one day he told me there are two things in this Parliament. If you’re eating, you shut up and turn a blind eye to everything. But if you defend the people, you can be certain that you will not make any money in this regime,” Njeri said.

Njeri stated that the remarks reflected the realities lawmakers confront within the current political environment and highlighted the tension between personal interests and public service.
She emphasized that her commitment remains rooted in representing the interests of ordinary citizens, despite the challenges that may come with such a stance. The Kirinyaga Woman Rep noted that safeguarding parliamentary independence and accountability is essential for strengthening democratic governance.

Her remarks add to the ongoing national debate about integrity, transparency, and the role of elected leaders in protecting public interest amid evolving political dynamics.
