Kevin Kinengo Urges Urgent Drought Relief and Expanded School Feeding Programme

By Irene Mwende

Kitui County Assembly Speaker Kevin Kinengo has called on both the national and county governments to take swift action to address the worsening effects of drought and food insecurity affecting vulnerable households and school-going children across the county.

Speaking during an exclusive interview Kinengo said the National Government to step up drought response measures by supplying relief food to affected communities and ensuring schools receive adequate food support to sustain learners.

“I urge the National Government to support those affected by drought and to distribute food to our schools,” he said, noting that hunger continues to disrupt learning and threaten the well-being of children.

At the county level, the Speaker emphasized the urgent need to strengthen the school feeding programme, particularly for Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) centres. He said many young learners depend on school meals as their primary source of nutrition, especially in drought-affected areas.
Kinengo urged the County Government of Kitui to prioritize funding for the ECDE feeding initiative to ensure consistent provision of meals and improve attendance and concentration among learners.
“The County Government should prioritise the school feeding programme for our ECDE centres,” he stated.
He further assured residents that the County Assembly is prepared to support the initiative through legislative action, including approving additional funding.
“The County Assembly of Kitui is ready to pass a supplementary budget for the county to support this vital programme for our ECDE learners,” he added.
Kinengo’s remarks highlight growing concern over food security in arid and semi-arid regions and underscore the importance of coordinated action between national and county governments to protect vulnerable populations and sustain education during periods of climatic stress.
