Jamii SACCO Chairman Harrison has urged young people across the country to join savings and credit cooperative societies, describing youth participation as vital to the future growth and sustainability of the cooperative movement.
Speaking during the Kenya Union of Savings and Credit Cooperatives (KUSCCO) 11th Annual SACCO Leaders’ Convention in Mombasa, Haririson called for a comprehensive review of SACCO regulations to strengthen governance, promote innovation, and enhance sustainability across the sector.
He emphasized the urgent need for reforms that will position SACCOs to thrive in an increasingly dynamic financial environment, noting that strong governance structures and modern regulatory frameworks are key to long-term stability.
Harrison urged SACCO leaders to adopt clear long-term strategies spanning five to 20 years, stressing that strategic planning is essential for sustainable growth and competitiveness.
“There is a need for SACCOs to adopt clear five-year to 20-year strategic plans to ensure long-term growth, financial stability, and competitiveness in the evolving financial landscape,” he said.
According to the chairman, a structured and forward-looking approach will enable SACCOs to manage risks effectively, embrace innovation, and remain resilient amid shifting market forces and regulatory changes.
He further underscored the importance of youth inclusion within the cooperative movement, calling on SACCOs to deliberately involve young people aged between 18 and 35 years.
Harrison noted that empowering young members would inject fresh ideas, accelerate digital transformation, and ensure leadership continuity in the sector.

The chairman’s remarks reinforced the growing consensus that youth engagement and regulatory modernization are essential to securing the future of Kenya’s cooperative financial sector.
