Kenya Railways MD Philip Mainga Strengthens Industry Partnerships as Freight Service Hits Record 695,000 Tonnes

Kenya Railways Managing Director, Mr. Philip Mainga, hosted Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM) Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Tobias Alando, and Shippers Council of East Africa (SCEA) Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Agayo Ogambi, in a high-level meeting aimed at deepening collaboration among the three key institutions in the logistics and manufacturing sectors.

The discussions focused on forging stronger partnerships to enhance the execution of each organization’s mandate, with an emphasis on improving efficiency, reducing logistics costs, and supporting regional trade.

During the meeting, Mr. Alando and Mr. Ogambi congratulated Mr. Mainga for steering Kenya Railways’ freight service to a historic achievement. The corporation moved 695,000 tonnes of cargo in November 2025, the highest monthly tonnage ever recorded. They applauded the freight service for its reliability in transporting containers from Port Reitz to the Inland Container Depot (ICD) Nairobi and Naivasha ICD, a consistency that has enabled businesses to avoid costly delays.

The business community also commended Kenya Railways for its continued investment in expanding its capacity, including the acquisition of additional wagons and the rollout of REEFER wagons. These refrigerated units have transformed the transportation of perishable goods, offering manufacturers and exporters a cost-effective alternative to airfreight.

Mr. Mainga reaffirmed Kenya Railways’ commitment to supporting manufacturers and shippers by ensuring timely movement of goods from the Port of Mombasa to destinations across Kenya and into the broader East African region. He emphasized that the corporation will continue enhancing efficiency and reliability to strengthen the region’s supply chain and economic competitiveness.
