Nairobi’s Chief Officer for Cooperatives, George Mutiso, has announced an ambitious plan to drive digital transformation and financial innovation within Kenya’s cooperative sector — a move set to boost trade opportunities, transparency, and sustainable growth across the country.
Speaking during the official unveiling of the Lake Region Economic Bloc Cooperative Conference in Nairobi, presided over by the Cabinet Secretary for Cooperatives and MSMEs, Hon. Wycliffe Oparanya, Mutiso emphasized that technology, innovation, and strategic partnerships are key to modernizing the cooperative movement and enhancing its competitiveness.
“Our goal is to exchange ideas that empower cooperatives to access new markets, improve efficiency through digital systems, and strengthen their role in the regional trade ecosystem,” Mutiso said.
He revealed that the Nairobi Cooperative Department is already in advanced talks with leading financial institutions to finalize strategic collaborations that will offer cooperative members affordable credit, digital banking services, and innovative financial tools to drive growth and resilience.
Mutiso further noted that digitizing cooperative operations will enhance transparency, accountability, and data-driven management, ensuring that cooperatives remain adaptable and impactful in Kenya’s dynamic economic environment.
“As we move forward, our focus remains on technology, innovation, and partnerships that deliver tangible value to members,” he added.
The announcement comes ahead of the Lake Region Economic Bloc Cooperative Conference, set for December 4th to 6th, 2025, where cooperative leaders, policymakers, and financial stakeholders will meet to discuss innovation, value addition, and cross-county trade collaboration.
