Mohammed Dagar, the Principal Secretary for the State Department of Transport, presided over the 61st Graduation Ceremony of the Railway Training Institute (RTI) for the academic years 2022-2023 and 2023-2024.

The event, held at RTI—an integral division of Kenya Railways Corporation under the State Department for Transport—marked a significant milestone in Kenya's transport and education sectors.

RTI, one of the country’s oldest institutions, provides specialized and affordable training in rail transportation, a key pillar of Kenya’s infrastructure development. The institute plays a pivotal role in equipping students with the skills needed for both the narrow gauge and standard gauge railway systems, which have been operational for over a century.
Addressing the press , PS Dagar highlighted the government’s commitment to fostering competency through institutions like RTI. He noted parallels with similar schools in aviation and maritime studies, such as the East African School of Aviation and the Bandari Maritime Academy, which support regulators like the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority and Kenya Maritime Authority.

This year, RTI proudly graduated 1,415 students in diverse fields including engineering, business, and maritime studies. The graduates are set to join various sectors within the rail and transport industries, with some expected to secure roles in government agencies, including Kenya Railways.
The PS emphasized Kenya's leadership in regional rail transportation and the government's efforts to expand rail infrastructure, including connecting the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) with Uganda and enhancing Nairobi’s commuter rail network. He also underscored the importance of gender balance and community inclusivity in education, citing partnerships with county governments and scholarships that support women in transport-related fields.

RTI continues to admit students from across East Africa, reinforcing Kenya's position as a regional hub for rail transport training. The institute also offers specialized courses, such as marine certifications and electrical engineering, catering to diverse needs within the transport and logistics sectors.
