Rosemary Okuta Champions Tree Planting Movement on Mazingira Day, Urges National Participation

In a passionate call to action, incoming ODM chairlady Rosemary Okuta has urged Kenyans from all walks of life to take part in nationwide tree planting activities in honor of Mazingira Day, a day set aside to promote environmental conservation and sustainable living.

Speaking on Thursday morning, Okuta emphasized the urgency of climate action and highlighted the role every citizen can play in protecting the environment.

“Happy Mazingira Day to everyone,” she said. “Let’s all step out and plant trees wherever we are. Together, we can make our country greener and more resilient to climate change.”

She stressed that environmental protection should not be viewed as the sole responsibility of the government, but rather a shared duty. According to Okuta, even small acts—like planting a single tree—contribute to the larger national and global fight against climate change.

Addressing youth and women in particular, Okuta encouraged them to take leadership in community-based greening efforts. “Sustainable development starts with caring for nature,” she said, underscoring the vital role of grassroots movements in achieving environmental goals.

Mazingira Day, observed every October in Kenya, is a national event aimed at fostering environmental awareness, encouraging conservation practices, and building a culture of sustainability across generations.

“This is our home, and we must protect it,” Okuta affirmed. “Let’s make every day a Mazingira Day by planting and nurturing trees.”

As communities across the country mark the day with tree planting drives and clean-up exercises, Okuta’s rallying cry adds momentum to Kenya’s broader agenda for climate resilience and ecological restoration.
