Pressure Mounts on Catherine Okoth to Allow Fair Polls, as ODM women Support Rosemary Okuta as New ODM Nairobi Chairlady
Wrangles within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Women’s League in Nairobi have reached boiling point, with senior women leaders issuing a scathing ultimatum to their long-serving chairlady, Hon. Catherine Okoth.
women accused Okoth of clinging to power, mismanaging funds, and sidelining members — allegations that have sparked outrage ahead of the upcoming grassroots elections.
The group, led by vocal party members, issued three non-negotiable demands:
1. Okoth must allow a free and fair election process,
2. Be prepared to concede defeat and support the incoming chairlady, Rosemary Okuta,
3. And refund all funds allegedly misappropriated from the women’s league.
“Leadership is about service, not personal gain,” one member declared, calling for transparency and a peaceful transition of leadership. “We are demanding accountability and a smooth handover to new leadership under Rosemary Okuta.”
The internal revolt marks a major rift within Nairobi’s ODM branch, with women leaders warning that business as usual will no longer be tolerated. They argue that past power struggles have fractured the party's unity and undermined efforts to empower women in the capital.
Okoth, who has steered the Nairobi Women’s League for several years, now faces a fierce challenge from within. As the grassroots elections draw near, all eyes are on whether she will step aside gracefully or engage in a political showdown to retain her position.
The ODM party leadership has yet to comment publicly on the developments, but insiders suggest pressure is mounting to address the grievances before the fallout damages the party’s image in Nairobi County.
This internal storm could reshape ODM’s women leadership in the city — or deepen existing divisions if not resolved swiftly.
