Kemri Unveils State-of-the-Art Laboratory in Milestone Event Graced by Health CS Aden Duale

In a significant boost to Kenya’s healthcare research capacity, the Kenya Medical Research Institute (Kemri) has officially launched a modern laboratory facility aimed at enhancing scientific innovation, disease surveillance, and health diagnostics in the country.

The inauguration ceremony, held at Kemri’s headquarters in Nairobi, was graced by Health Cabinet Secretary Hon. Aden Duale and Kemri Board Chairman, Dr. Daniel Alila. The event marked a milestone in the nation’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its health systems and improve responsiveness to emerging health threats.

CS Duale praised Kemri’s commitment to medical research and public health, emphasizing the lab’s potential to transform disease management and pandemic preparedness.

“This new facility is not just a building. It represents our collective commitment to safeguarding the health of Kenyans. It will enable our scientists to conduct cutting-edge research and respond to outbreaks with speed and accuracy,” said CS Duale.

The laboratory, equipped with advanced diagnostic tools and genomic sequencing capabilities, will support research into infectious and non-communicable diseases, contributing to local and regional health solutions. It will also serve as a training hub for local scientists, positioning Kenya as a leader in biomedical research in Africa.

Kemri Board Chairman Dr. Alila reiterated the institute’s strategic vision to foster innovation and collaboration in medical science. “With this investment, Kemri is reaffirming its role at the forefront of health research, not just for Kenya, but for the entire continent,” he said.

The event was attended by stakeholders from government, academia, and international health organizations, all of whom underscored the critical role of research in achieving universal health coverage and resilience against future pandemics.

This development comes at a time when the health sector is increasingly leaning on research-driven approaches to combat both longstanding and emerging health challenges. The new Kemri laboratory stands as a testament to the power of science, policy, and partnership
