MD Railways Philip Mainga, PS Daghar Tour Mombasa Commuter Rail as Game-Changer for City Transport
Transport Principal Secretary Mohamed Daghar today led an inspection tour of the ongoing Mombasa Commuter Rail project, taking a test ride onboard the soon-to-be-launched service. Accompanied by Kenya Railways Managing Director Philip Mainga, the PS reaffirmed the government’s commitment to delivering modern, reliable, and affordable urban transport solutions to coastal residents.
The commuter service is set to transform daily travel for Mombasa residents, offering faster, safer, and more cost-effective movement across the city. Beyond easing congestion on Mombasa’s roads, the train will provide last-mile connectivity for passengers of the Madaraka Express, ensuring seamless travel between Nairobi, Mombasa, and surrounding areas.
Speaking during the tour, Mr. Mainga noted that the project has been designed with commuters’ convenience in mind. “We are introducing both a ‘Park and Ride’ model, where private motorists can securely park and board the train, and a ‘Drop and Ride’ option for public service vehicles. This will make the service accessible to everyone and enhance efficiency,” he said.
With operations expected to begin soon, the Mombasa Commuter Rail is positioned as a landmark project in decongesting the coastal city, promoting economic productivity, and improving quality of life for thousands of daily commuters.
