Kenya has secured a major boost ahead of its CHAN 2024 quarterfinal clash against Madagascar after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) approved an increase in stadium capacity at Kasarani to 80%.
Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports, Salim Mvurya, EGH, announced on Thursday that following a successful appeal by the Football Kenya Federation (FKF), up to 36,000 fans will now be allowed to attend the highly anticipated tie set for Friday evening.
“Tomorrow we are happy to announce to all Kenyans that now in Kasarani we will have 80% attendance capacity, which translates to 36,000 fans,” Mvurya said during a press briefing in his office. He was flanked by Sports Principal Secretary, FKF President Hussein Mohamed, and Local Organizing Committee (LOC) Chair Nicolas Musonye.
CAF’s decision follows positive reports on Kenya’s organization and fan discipline during last Sunday’s fixture, which was adjudged to be fully compliant with safety and operational standards.
“The report officially presented to us by CAF reflects very good progress. They observed that the game last Sunday was in full compliance,” Mvurya noted.
The CS urged Kenyans to replicate the same high standards of conduct, saying the move could pave the way for full stadium capacity in future fixtures.
“This is good news to Kenyans. We want to reiterate that we continue to comply in the game tomorrow. It’s a big game, and therefore we urge all Kenyans to continue to comply, so that the next time we play 100% without any problem,” he added.
The Harambee Stars will take on Madagascar at Kasarani in a decisive quarterfinal tie, as Kenya looks to edge closer to continental glory on home soil.
