AMTO Launched to Safeguard Matatu Operators Against Police Harassment and Insurance Challenges

Nairobi, August 22, 2025 – The Association of Matatu Transport Owners (AMTO) has officially been launched, with its leadership pledging to transform the matatu sector by addressing key challenges that have long affected operators.

Speaking during the launch, AMTO Onesmus Ndambuki said the association was established to champion the welfare of matatu owners and ensure smooth operations across all 47 counties.

“Our mission is to make sure that matatus operate in an organized, safe, and fair environment. We will address issues of insurance, compliance, and persistent police harassment that undermine the dignity of our industry,” said Ndambuki.

The launch of AMTO comes at a time when the public transport sector continues to grapple with rising insurance premiums, constant confrontations with law enforcement, and lack of unified representation. The association aims to engage government agencies and stakeholders in creating long-term solutions for the sector.

AMTO further pledged to streamline operations, advocate for better policies, and build a strong network of matatu owners to enhance efficiency and accountability in Kenya’s public
