Ann Kioko Urges Ruto to Retract Kenya’s Support for UN SOGI Mandate: 'Protect the Soul of Our Nation

The news of Kenya's July 5, 2025 vote endorsing the renewal of the UN Independent Expert on Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, and Expression (SOGI) sent shockwaves across the country. Kioko, a stalwart campaign director, stood at the forefront of a furious backlash, her voice echoing the sentiments of over 12,000 Kenyans who signed a petition in outrage.

"How could we betray our Constitution, our families, and our values like this?" Kioko thundered, her words dripping with anguish and urgency. The vote, she argued, was a stark contradiction to the spirit of Kenya's Constitution, which recognizes the family as the natural and fundamental unit of society.

As news spread, Kenyans from all walks of life poured out their grief, anger, and shock on social media, demanding answers from the government. Many felt blindsided, claiming they were not consulted or represented in this critical decision. The hashtag #WithdrawKenyaSupport trended on Twitter, with users calling out President Ruto to take immediate action.

Kioko's message was clear: it was not too late to rectify this egregious mistake. "We urge President Ruto to issue a public statement disassociating Kenya from this vote and reaffirming our commitment to our Constitution, our families, and our cultural and moral values," she urged. International diplomatic norms have provisions for countries to issue post-vote statements to clarify or correct their positions, and many nations have done so in the past.

The world watched as Kenya teetered on the brink, its people praying for bold leadership to restore the nation's dignity and sovereignty. Kioko's concluding words still resonated: "Withdraw Kenya's support. Clarify the vote. Protect the soul of our nation."

With mounting pressure and public outcry, President Ruto faced an unprecedented test of leadership. The fate of Kenya's stance on SOGI hung precariously in the balance, as the nation waited with bated breath for a response that would either redeem or further alienate its people.
