Mudavadi Announces Formation of Specialized Unit to Address Rising Femicide Cases

Acting Interior Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has announced the creation of a specialized missing persons unit within the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to focus exclusively on femicide cases. Speaking during a national security briefing on Thursday, Mudavadi revealed that the unit, led by Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, will operate under the DCI's homicide division.

The formation of this unit comes in response to alarming statistics showing 100 femicide-related murders reported between August and November 2024. Mudavadi emphasized the government's commitment to addressing this crisis, which has raised concerns among citizens and human rights organizations.
“This unit will ensure expedited investigations and accountability in cases of femicide and missing persons related to these crimes. We are determined to bring justice to the victims and their families,” Mudavadi said.

The Cabinet Secretary also highlighted the broader issue of Gender-Based Violence (GBV), revealing that Kenya recorded 7,107 cases of sexual and GBV incidents between September 2023 and late 2024. Nairobi emerged as the county with the highest number of cases, while Mandera and Samburu reported the least.

Mudavadi assured the public that progress has been made, with the DCI completing investigations into several cases, many of which are now awaiting trial in court. He also urged the public to collaborate with law enforcement by reporting suspicious activities and supporting the fight against GBV.

The announcement underscores the government’s commitment to addressing crimes targeting women and vulnerable groups. Mudavadi called for collective efforts from all stakeholders, including community leaders, NGOs, and law enforcement agencies, to tackle these issues effectively.

The establishment of the unit is expected to restore public confidence in the justice system and provide a lifeline for families seeking justice for their loved ones.
