Kenya Kwanza Government's Inclusive Agenda: Transforming Lives and Setting New Standards for Disability Rights in Africa"

By Diana

The Kenya Kwanza Government has set an inspiring benchmark in disability rights, with an inclusive agenda designed to empower persons with disabilities (PWDs) and cement Kenya's leadership in inclusivity across Africa. Guided by Article 54 of the Constitution, which ensures equality, access, and inclusion for PWDs, the government has made significant strides across several crucial areas, delivering life-changing opportunities and support.

At the heart of this agenda is the National Council for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD), established to protect, support, and empower PWDs. Through economic empowerment programs, Kenya has extended financial support to 574 disability-focused Self-Help Groups in the 2023/24 fiscal year via the UWEZO Fund, Women Enterprise Fund, Youth Enterprise Fund, and NYOTA. In a remarkable step, 30 disability-owned businesses secured government contracts through the Access to Government Procurement Opportunities (AGPO) program, and 57 individuals received start-up kits for businesses in sectors like catering and agriculture.

In the educational sector, facilities in six schools have been upgraded to improve learning opportunities for students with disabilities. Additionally, scholarships were awarded to 2,232 learners with disabilities, while 47,000 households with severely disabled members receive cash support, with 18,291 new beneficiaries recently added.

To support independence, the government provided 4,222 assistive devices such as wheelchairs and hearing aids and trained 17 individuals newly affected by disabilities in independent living skills. Additionally, through the Albinism Support Program, 3,840 individuals received sunscreen, and 1,727 underwent cancer screening.

Efforts in healthcare extend through Universal Health Coverage partnerships that provide accessible rehabilitative care, assistive technologies, and preventive health programs.

With affordable, accessible housing featuring ramps, wide doorways, and other inclusive standards, the Affordable Housing Program (AHP) is opening doors for vulnerable groups. By setting such comprehensive standards, Kenya Kwanza’s government is creating a future where every citizen, regardless of ability, has the opportunity to thrive.
