Mwenda Thunanira Calls for Accountability, Says Kenya Must Measure Development by Results, Not Project Announcements

Incoming Isiolo North Mp Mwenda Thunanira has called for a shift in how Kenya measures leadership and development, arguing that the success of public investments should be judged by the problems they solve, the money accounted for and the lives they transform rather than the number of projects announced or launched.

In his remarks, Thunanira questioned the impact of public spending on infrastructure, healthcare, water, electricity and other essential services, noting that some projects fail to deliver meaningful benefits to the communities they are intended to serve. He cited unoccupied markets, stalled stadiums, inadequate hospital supplies and communities still waiting for reliable water and electricity connections as examples of the gap between public investment and service delivery.

Thunanira also raised concerns about the economic viability of major infrastructure projects, including airports, arguing that public funds should be directed towards investments supported by clear demand, sound feasibility studies and measurable economic benefits. He stressed that every public project carries an opportunity cost, warning that money spent on underperforming investments could otherwise support hospitals, schools, businesses and essential community services.

He called for greater transparency and accountability at every stage of public investment, from project planning and budgeting to implementation and evaluation. According to his remarks, commissioning ceremonies and budget expenditure should not automatically be treated as evidence of development unless citizens can point to tangible improvements in their daily lives.

Thunanira urged leaders and policymakers to adopt a results-oriented approach that prioritises value for money and measurable outcomes. He challenged Kenyans to reflect on whether public resources are genuinely transforming lives or whether the country has become too focused on spending money without adequately assessing what that expenditure delivers.
