Kisumu Deputy Governor Welcomes Digital Literacy Programme to Boost Learning in Junior Schools
Kisumu Deputy Governor has welcomed the launch of the National Government’s Digital Literacy Programme (DLP), describing the initiative as an important step towards modernising education and equipping learners with skills needed in an increasingly technology-driven world.
Speaking during the rollout at Obambo Junior School in Kisumu West, the Deputy Governor joined Principal Secretary for Children Services Hon. Caren Age’ngo, Kisumu East MP Hon. Shakeel Shabir, County Commissioner Ramadhan Mwabudzo and other education stakeholders in supporting the initiative, which will provide teachers with laptops and interactive smart boards to enhance classroom instruction and support the Competency-Based Education (CBE) framework.
The programme, implemented by the ICT Authority and the Ministry of Education under the Kenya Digital Economy Acceleration Project (KDEAP), with support from the World Bank, targets 10,382 public Junior Schools across all 47 counties. In Kisumu County, 305 public Junior Schools will benefit from the rollout, while an additional 370 Junior Secondary Schools are expected to receive the devices next year.
The Deputy Governor noted that integrating technology into teaching and learning would strengthen teachers’ capacity, improve classroom engagement and expand learners’ access to digital educational resources, while supporting the county’s broader efforts to improve education outcomes.
