KEHPHPU Raises Alarm Over Ebola Case, Demands Immediate End to Public Health Officers’ Strike
The Kenya Environmental Health and Public Health Practitioners’ Union (KEHPHPU) has raised concerns over the country’s preparedness to contain Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) following confirmation of Kenya’s first case. The union warned that the ongoing nationwide strike by Public Health Officers, Specialists and Technicians has left critical disease surveillance, contact tracing, investigations and community mobilisation services severely disrupted.
KEHPHPU also questioned the four-day delay in publicly reporting the confirmed case and cited vulnerabilities at border points, shortages of qualified personnel, inadequate screening infrastructure, limited isolation facilities and insufficient personal protective equipment. The union said frontline public health workers had also not received adequate EVD training at community level.
The union is demanding an immediate resolution to the strike, comprehensive EVD training for frontline workers, and the deployment of more than 2,000 Public Health Officers across counties and Ports of Entry. It has also called for properly equipped isolation and quarantine centres, greater involvement of public health experts in Ebola response planning, enhanced risk allowances and uninterrupted supplies of PPE.
KEHPHPU National General Secretary and CEO Hon. Brown Ashira Olaly further called for greater public health expertise in the leadership and management of national public health institutions, warning that excluding public health professionals from key decision-making could undermine the country’s response to the outbreak.
