INCOMING KISUMU GOVERNOR MATTHEW OWILI CHAMPIONS STRONGER MATERNAL AND NEWBORN CARE IN KISUMU
Incoming Kisumu Governor Matthew Owili has called for stronger interventions to improve maternal and newborn healthcare in public facilities, as Kenya steps up efforts to reduce preventable deaths among mothers and newborns.
Owili hosted Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi and Kisumu First Lady Mama Dorothy Nyong’o in Kisumu for discussions on strengthening maternal and newborn health services. The engagement comes as Kenya implements the Every Woman, Every Newborn, Everywhere (EWENE) Acceleration Plan 2026–2028, a national framework targeting preventable maternal and newborn deaths.
Through the Okoa Malaika Programme, Lumumba Sub-County Hospital is set to receive life-saving neonatal equipment from the Ushiriki Wema Foundation to support premature and vulnerable newborns.
Owili thanked the Office of the Spouse to the Prime Cabinet Secretary and Ushiriki Wema Foundation for supporting practical interventions that complement government efforts, saying improved equipment and coordinated partnerships are essential to ensuring mothers and newborns receive safe, timely and quality care.
The discussions were also attended by Migori County First Lady Dr. Agnes Ochilo, Kisumu County Chief of Staff Aloice Ager and Director of Medical Services Dr. Don Ogolla, among other officials.
