Eastleigh Building Collapse: Engineers Call for Tougher Construction Rules and Accountability

The Association of Consulting Engineers of Kenya (ACEK) has called for stricter enforcement of building regulations and thorough investigations into the collapse of a multi-storey building under construction in Eastleigh, Nairobi.

Speaking during the press briefing The President Association of Consuting Engineers of Kenya Eng.Gabriel Jabong'o  said the incident highlights the urgent need to strengthen construction safety standards, improve site inspections and ensure developers engage qualified and licensed professionals throughout the construction process.

ACEK also expressed sympathy to affected families, workers, businesses and the Eastleigh community, urging authorities to prioritise rescue operations and the safe recovery of people still unaccounted for. The association commended emergency responders, including the Kenya Red Cross, National Police Service, Kenya Defence Forces, Nairobi City County and the National Youth Service, for their efforts to save lives.

ACEK warned that building collapses can result from several factors, including structural design deficiencies, poor workmanship, substandard materials, weak foundations, inadequate supervision and failure to follow approved construction plans. However, the association cautioned against assigning blame before investigations establish the actual cause of the Eastleigh incident.

It called for stronger accountability for developers, contractors, consultants and regulatory authorities where wrongdoing or negligence is proven. The association also urged the adoption of digital construction monitoring systems, more frequent site inspections and closer collaboration among professional bodies and regulators.

ACEK maintained that public safety must take precedence over cost-cutting, adding that proper engineering design, independent supervision and compliance with approved standards are essential to preventing similar tragedies.
