Airtel Money, ChildFund Launch KSh12.7 Million Project to Support Deaf Learners in Garissa
Learners at Garissa School for the Deaf are set to benefit from improved classrooms, digital learning facilities and better sanitation following the launch of a KSh12.7 million infrastructure project by Airtel Money Kenya, through the Airtel Africa Foundation, in partnership with ChildFund Kenya.
The project, launched on October 14, 2026, under the Building Brighter Futures initiative, seeks to promote inclusive education by providing four new classrooms, an ICT centre and improved water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) facilities to support the school’s growing student population.
The infrastructure upgrade will also include separate toilet and bathroom facilities for boys and girls, an extended water pipeline, a 20,000-litre water storage tank and a 20-point handwashing station. A separate sanitation facility for teachers will also be constructed to improve hygiene and create a more conducive learning environment.
Airtel Money Kenya Acting Managing Director Bonke Michael said the investment goes beyond infrastructure, noting that the goal is to create a safe and inclusive environment where every child can learn, grow and realise their potential.
Fatuma Omar, a Curriculum Support Officer for Special Needs Education in Garissa County, said a conducive learning environment is essential for effective curriculum implementation and ensuring that learners with disabilities receive opportunities to achieve their full potential.
The Garissa project forms part of the KSh62 million Building Brighter Futures initiative, which is expected to benefit more than 2,000 learners across four public schools in Baringo, Garissa and Wajir counties. In Baringo, KSh37 million has already been allocated to improve learning and sanitation infrastructure at Marigat Integrated Day and Boarding Primary School and Marigat Special School for the Visually Impaired.
The partnership between Airtel Money Kenya, the Airtel Africa Foundation and ChildFund Kenya underscores their commitment to expanding access to quality, inclusive education by investing in facilities that respond to the needs of learners, particularly children living with disabilities.
