NCCK, IEBC Push for Democratic, Credible and Peaceful 2027 Elections

The National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) and the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) have called for collective action, citizen participation and dialogue to safeguard democratic, credible and peaceful elections in 2027.

Speaking during the National Stakeholders Convention at Ufungamano House in Nairobi, NCCK General Secretary Rev. Canon Chris Kinyanjui said democratic space can gradually be eroded through a series of compromises, urging Kenyans to remain actively engaged in protecting the country’s democratic gains.
Rev. Kinyanjui said participation was key to securing peace, calling on citizens to show up, ask difficult questions and stand up for the country as Kenya prepares for the 2027 General Election.

The two-day convention brings together
 stakeholders in the democratic and electoral space to assess Kenya’s preparedness for the 2027 polls, identify risks that could undermine democratic and peaceful elections and develop mitigation measures.

Representing the IEBC Chairperson, Commissioner Dr. Alutalala Mukhwana outlined the Commission’s state of preparedness and reaffirmed its commitment to delivering a credible, transparent and peaceful 2027 General Election.
Dr. Mukhwana urged the religious community and other stakeholders to play their respective roles in strengthening the electoral process, hold the Commission accountable and embrace dialogue as a way of charting a peaceful path towards 2027.

The convention is convened by the Kenya
 Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB), Evangelical Alliance of Kenya (EAK), Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims (SUPKEM) and NCCK, with participants expected to formulate strategies and commitments aimed at safeguarding the integrity of democratic outcomes before, during and after the 2027 electoral cycle
