AZIMIO REBRANDS AS UKOMBOZI ALLIANCE AS OPPOSITION RALLIES AHEAD OF 2027

Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition has formally agreed to rebrand as the Ukombozi Alliance, Wiper Party leader Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka announced on Monday, September 21, 2026, as opposition leaders intensify consultations ahead of the 2027 General Election.

 Kalonzo said all necessary steps to implement the decision would be undertaken expeditiously, declaring that the coalition was “on the move.” The rebranding follows earlier discussions within opposition circles on transforming Azimio into a broader political vehicle ahead of the polls. 

Kalonzo said former President Uhuru Kenyatta, who chairs the coalition council, would convene a Jubilee Party meeting on Tuesday to make key decisions that would subsequently be communicated to the Ukombozi Alliance. He said arrangements would then be made for the official handover of the chairmanship of the coalition political party.

 Kalonzo also welcomed leaders and representatives from other political formations who attended the consultations, signalling efforts to bring additional parties and political actors into the new alliance.

The meeting also focused on the recent High Court ruling concerning the government's 15 percent stake in Safaricom. Kalonzo said the coalition expected the Treasury to comply with the court decision, while opposition leaders also addressed President William Ruto's recent remarks concerning former President Uhuru Kenyatta and the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. The remarks drew criticism from speakers at the meeting, including senior counsel James Orengo.

Orengo called for continued opposition consultations and described the emerging alliance as an effort to unite different political formations around a common platform. He used the slogan “one team, one term, one coalition” while urging opposition leaders to maintain unity as preparations for the 2027 election gather momentum.

The Ukombozi Alliance name comes as opposition parties and movements continue separate consultations over possible alliances, with several formations seeking to establish political vehicles ahead of the 2027 polls.
