SGR Phase 2B Set to Boost Connectivity and Economic Opportunities in Nyamira
Kenya Railways Managing Director Philip J. Mainga, EBS, has held discussions with Nyamira Governor Amos Kimwomi Nyaribo, North Mugirango MP Joash Nyamoko and West Mugirango MP Stephen Mogaka on the proposed Naivasha–Kisumu Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) Phase 2B project.
The proposed railway line will cover approximately 14 kilometres within Nyamira County and is expected to strengthen the county’s connection to the national railway network and wider economy.
Two key railway facilities are planned along the route: Ikonge North Passing Station and Magwagwa Intermediate Station, which will be located about 1.6 kilometres northwest of Magwagwa town.
The project has progressed with the completion of the route alignment design, while corridor and station pegging activities are currently ongoing. The contractor is expected to establish a construction camp in September 2026, paving the way for the next phase of implementation.
For Nyamira residents, the proposed SGR is expected to create new opportunities for farmers and businesses by improving access to markets and facilitating the movement of agricultural produce and other goods.
The railway is also projected to create employment opportunities, stimulate local businesses, attract investment and improve the movement of people and goods across the county.
The Naivasha–Kisumu SGR Phase 2B is therefore being viewed as a major infrastructure project that could enhance Nyamira’s connectivity while opening new pathways for economic growth and integration into Kenya’s broader transport and commercial network.
