Opposition Leaders Call for Urgent Action to Curb Rising Political Violence Ahead of 2027 Polls
Opposition leaders under the United Alternative Government and Linda Mwananchi Movement have called for urgent action to address what they describe as a growing pattern of political violence and intimidation in different parts of Kenya ahead of the 2027 General Election.
In a joint statement issued in Nairobi on August 19, 2026, the leaders said reported attacks involving political leaders, journalists and ordinary citizens could no longer be dismissed as isolated confrontations between rival political supporters. They cited incidents involving former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua in Rongai, Dr Fred Matiang’i in Molo, and violence surrounding Linda Mwananchi activities in Homa Bay and Kisii.
The leaders called for independent investigations into the incidents, particularly allegations that some attacks occurred in the presence of, or within the operational reach of, police officers. They urged the Government to explain how organised groups of armed civilians could mobilise and attack political leaders, journalists, citizens and even police officers.
They also called on the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to work with relevant institutions to ensure that Kenyans can exercise their right to vote freely and peacefully.
The coalition further urged the Office of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) to closely monitor developments in Kenya and undertake a preliminary assessment of whether credible information exists to warrant examination under the Rome Statute.
The leaders said accountability was necessary to deter political violence and warned that political office should not shield anyone from international criminal accountability where the legal thresholds under the Rome Statute are met.
They called on religious leaders, civil society, the legal fraternity, professional bodies, the media, youth organisations and the international diplomatic community to stand united in defence of the Constitution and resist intimidation, militia activity and politically sponsored violence.
The statement stressed that the 2027 General Election should be a contest of ideas and ballots rather than intimidation and violence. The leaders also announced plans for a People's Forum for Electoral Preparedness scheduled for October 9, 2026, to be convened by former Chief Justice Emeritus David Maraga, former Attorney General Emeritus Justin Muturi and Azimio Secretary General Caroli Omondi.
