Kenyatta University VC Prof. John Okumu Unveils Transformation Agenda Focused on AI, Research and Sustainability

Kenyatta University’s newly installed Vice-Chancellor, Prof. John Okumu, has unveiled an ambitious transformation agenda aimed at strengthening academic excellence, research and innovation, digital transformation, infrastructure and institutional sustainability.

Prof. Okumu made the remarks on Friday, August 28, 2026, during his installation as the 7th Vice-Chancellor of Kenyatta University, held at the university’s Graduation Square. 

In his acceptance speech, Prof. Okumu pledged to lead the university with integrity, transparency, inclusivity and dedication, saying his familiarity with the institution’s history, strengths and challenges would guide his tenure. 

His agenda is anchored on the theme “Forging Ahead in Unity, Excellence, Sustainability and Greater Global Impact.” He said the university must position itself as the most preferred institution in the region and beyond amid rapid technological change, growing competition for students and research funding, and rising expectations from society. 

Prof. Okumu said the university will prioritise the quality and relevance of academic programmes, with curricula designed to equip graduates with competencies, creativity, ethical grounding and the ability to solve real-world problems.

He also placed research and innovation at the centre of the university’s growth, promising increased support for multidisciplinary research in areas including health, climate change, food security, artificial intelligence, digital technologies, manufacturing, education, governance and sustainable development. 

The Vice-Chancellor further pledged to strengthen partnerships with government, industry, development agencies and international institutions to help researchers secure grants and translate research findings into practical solutions.

On digital transformation, Prof. Okumu said Kenyatta University must move beyond simply digitising existing processes and rethink how it operates. He identified artificial intelligence, data analytics, digital learning, automation and emerging technologies as key tools for improving teaching, research, student services and institutional management. 

He, however, stressed that technology adoption must remain inclusive, ethical and secure, ensuring that students and staff are not left behind because of financial or technological barriers.

Infrastructure development will also be a major priority under his administration. Prof. Okumu highlighted the ongoing construction of a 2,500-capacity affordable student hostel as one of the key investments, alongside plans to improve laboratories, lecture spaces, libraries, ICT infrastructure, student facilities and staff workspaces. 

The new Vice-Chancellor also promised to strengthen financial discipline, diversify revenue streams and improve efficiency in service delivery as the university navigates increasing operational pressures and limited resources. 

Student welfare will form another pillar of his administration, with plans to enhance academic advising, mentorship, career development, counselling, psychosocial support, financial guidance, disability inclusion and accommodation.

Prof. Okumu said the university’s ultimate goal should be to produce competent, ethical, innovative and resilient graduates capable of creating opportunities, solving societal problems and contributing to Kenya and the global community. 

He called for stronger collaboration among the government, university council, Senate, management, staff, students, alumni and partners, saying transformation could not be achieved by the Vice-Chancellor alone. 

Prof. Okumu concluded by pledging to position Kenyatta University as a financially sustainable, academically excellent, socially responsive, digitally enabled and globally connected institution anchored in Kenya’s development aspirations.

He said the university’s next chapter would require collective effort to strengthen its foundations, unlock its potential and take it to greater heights of excellence and societal impact.
