Incoming Lamu Woman Representative Jenniffer Wairimu Hosts Inaugural Women’s Tournament to Promote Sports and Talent in Lamu County

Incoming Lamu Woman Representative Jennifer Wairimu has hosted the inaugural Waridi Women’s Tournament, bringing together more than 2,000 sports enthusiasts and 18 teams from different communities across Lamu County.

The tournament featured six sporting categories, including women’s football, volleyball, netball, handball and girls’ and boys’ basketball. The event provided a platform for women and young people to showcase their sporting talent while promoting unity, peace and social cohesion through competition.
Wairimu, who is also President of the Kenya Youth Organization and Founder of the Waridi Foundation, said the tournament was part of her commitment to supporting grassroots talent. She pledged to do more if elected Lamu Woman Representative in 2027, including advocating for a dedicated sports fund, sports transport for teams, regular tournaments and greater support for young athletes attending national trials and scouting opportunities.

The tournament saw Lake Amu emerge as women’s football champions, Tigres win women’s volleyball, Mpeketoni Ladies take the netball title, Vikings win handball, Mpekx Angels claim girls’ basketball while Mpex Heats won the boys’ basketball category.

Wairimu said her vision is to ensure talented young people in Lamu have opportunities to turn their abilities into careers and livelihoods. Through the Waridi Foundation, she has also supported grassroots initiatives including the annual Lamu 7s and talent shows aimed at nurturing young people across Lamu and the wider Coast region.

The inaugural Waridi Women’s Tournament has therefore positioned sport as more than competition, with a broader focus on empowering women and youth, discovering talent and creating opportunities for young people to pursue their sporting ambitions.
