El Niño Alert: Meteorological Service Warns of Strong Climate Phenomenon as Experts Prepare National Outlook
The Kenya Meteorological Service has raised concerns over the likelihood of a strong El Niño phenomenon as it convenes the 13th National Climate Outlook Forum to assess the expected weather patterns and their potential impacts across the country.
Speaking ahead of the release of the national climate outlook, Acting Director of Meteorological Services Edward Maina Muriuki said the forum brings together meteorologists, scientists and representatives from different sectors to develop advisories based on the expected weather conditions.
Muriuki explained that the Kenya Meteorological Service's role is primarily advisory, with meteorologists providing the weather forecast while experts from sectors such as agriculture, health and water help determine the likely impacts and formulate appropriate sector-specific advisories.
He said the forum will provide a platform for stakeholders to understand what weather conditions are expected and prepare for the possible consequences.
Muriuki also clarified that El Niño does not automatically translate into heavy rainfall, noting that the phenomenon refers to abnormal warming of ocean waters in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean and occurs periodically, generally every three to seven years.
According to Muriuki, global forecasting models and scientists are currently indicating a high probability of a strong El Niño event, with some forecasting centres placing the likelihood above 80 per cent.
He said the phenomenon is already influencing weather patterns and that the Kenya Meteorological Service will provide a more comprehensive forecast on Wednesday.
The forthcoming outlook is expected to give a detailed sector-by-sector assessment as well as regional perspectives, enabling communities, government agencies and other stakeholders to take early measures in response to the anticipated weather conditions.
Muriuki urged the media to attend the Wednesday briefing, saying the forecast will provide detailed information on what different parts of the country should expect and the possible impacts of the projected climate conditions.
