Ekaterina Handa Vows Transparency and Better Access to Justice in JSC Bid

Advocate E Katerina Handa has pledged to champion transparency, accountability and better access to justice if elected as the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) female representative to the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).

Handa, who was admitted to the Roll of Advocates in 2007, said her decision to seek the position is driven by her extensive experience in legal practice and her desire to strengthen collaboration between the legal profession and the Judiciary.

Speaking during a legal conference, Handa said the JSC plays a critical constitutional role in promoting access to justice, overseeing the administration of courts and managing human resources within the Judiciary.

She said her experience serving in various LSK committees, including the Commercial Practice Committee, Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Committee and Editorial Committee, had given her a deeper understanding of the challenges facing advocates.

Handa identified delays in court processes and inefficiencies in court registries among the key concerns that continue to affect lawyers and litigants.

“I have seen what lawyers go through, particularly when they interact with the Judiciary through practice and professional committees,” Handa said.

She also called for greater transparency in the recruitment and appointment of judicial officers, noting that many advocates aspire to serve as judges and other judicial officers.

According to Handa, advocates seeking judicial positions should have clearer information on the criteria used by the JSC to shortlist, interview and select candidates.

She further proposed that unsuccessful applicants be given adequate feedback on their interview performance to help them understand areas requiring improvement and prepare better for future opportunities.

“We want the Judiciary to be fairly transparent in terms of how they absorb people into the Judiciary,” she said.

Handa also pledged to establish platforms through which LSK members can directly engage with the JSC, raise concerns and contribute to discussions on issues affecting the legal profession and the administration of justice.

She noted that the LSK represents about 28,000 advocates and therefore requires strong and effective representation at the JSC.

If elected, Handa said she would use her experience in legal practice, academia and LSK structures to advance the interests of advocates while promoting an independent, accountable and trusted Judiciary.

Her campaign is anchored on integrity, transparency and accountability, with improving court administration, strengthening access to justice and promoting fairness in the appointment of judicial officers among her key priorities.
