Witness Tells Court He Was Paid KSh50,000 to Ferry Alleged Killer in MP Ong'ondo Were Murder Case

The murder trial of Kasipul Member of Parliament Ong'ondo Were took a dramatic turn on Tuesday after a prosecution witness told the Kibera Law Courts that he was paid KSh50,000 to transport the man accused of carrying out the fatal shooting.

Testifying under tight security before Justice Diana Kavetza, the eighth prosecution witness recounted how he was summoned to Jacaranda, where he met the first suspect. Believing he had been hired for a routine motorcycle transport job, he ferried the suspect to a car wash before the two proceeded to Buruburu.

According to the witness, they later met another suspect who was driving a white Toyota Crown. The motorcycle and the car then travelled together towards Nairobi's Central Business District, stopping at a petrol station along Jogoo Road where the driver of the Toyota Crown paid for fuel.

The witness told the court that one of the suspects carried a small bag and instructed him to wait while surveillance was conducted on the victim near the Parliament area.

He said he later followed the MP's white Toyota Crown along Kenyatta Avenue, Valley Road and Hurlingham before reaching the Daystar University roundabout. There, the suspect asked him to stop because of traffic.

Moments later, the witness testified, he heard gunshots. The suspect quickly returned, jumped onto the motorcycle and ordered him to speed away from the scene. They rode back to Buruburu, where the witness later received KSh50,000 for the transport.

The witness maintained that he had no prior knowledge of any murder plot, insisting he believed he had simply been hired to provide transport services.

His testimony, delivered under heavy security, is expected to play a significant role in the prosecution's case by linking the alleged gunman and the driver of the Toyota Crown to the events surrounding the killing of MP Ong'ondo Were.

The trial continues at the Kibera Law Courts as the prosecution seeks to establish the circumstances behind the legislator's murder.
