UDA Commends IEBC After Ol Kalou By-Election, Reaffirms Confidence in Ruto's 2027 Re-election Bid

The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has congratulated the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) for conducting what it described as a credible and transparent Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election, despite the ruling party's defeat.

Speaking during a press briefing on Friday, UDA Secretary General Hassan Omar Hassan praised the electoral commission for allowing the will of the people to prevail, saying the outcome demonstrated the strength of Kenya's democratic institutions.

"One of the main subject matters of this press conference today is to congratulate the IEBC. You did a stellar job. You held us all to account. You let the popular will of the people of Kenya prevail," Omar said.

The ruling party also commended its supporters, campaign teams and senior party leaders for running what it termed a spirited campaign. Omar singled out National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung'wah, digital strategist Dennis Itumbi and former Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria for their leadership during the campaign.

Despite losing the by-election, Omar maintained that UDA remains committed to participating in every electoral contest across the country and will field candidates in all constituencies during the 2027 General Election.

"We will participate in every election. UDA will field a candidate in every part of this country in the coming General Election," he stated.

The Secretary General argued that the Ol Kalou results reflected a changing political landscape rather than a rejection of the ruling party, noting that traditional political strongholds are increasingly becoming competitive.

"This time we did not emerge victorious, but it shows there is a shifting architecture of national politics. Former strongholds have become battlegrounds and former battlegrounds have become strongholds," he said.

Omar expressed confidence that President William Ruto remains on course to secure a second term in office, insisting that the overall political environment favours his re-election in 2027.

Addressing concerns over the government's investment in the Mount Kenya region, Omar defended President Ruto's appointments and development agenda, saying the region had played a critical role in the President's 2022 electoral victory. He noted that appointments of Cabinet Secretaries, Principal Secretaries and heads of state corporations reflected the President's responsibility to recognise the support he received.

At the same time, he emphasized that the Kenya Kwanza administration serves all Kenyans regardless of their political affiliation and remains committed to fairness, equity and inclusive development through investments in roads, bridges, energy and water infrastructure across the country.

During the briefing, Omar also criticized former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, accusing him of undermining independent institutions and promoting divisive politics. He alleged that Gachagua had repeatedly attacked institutions such as the IEBC and security agencies whenever they did not align with his political interests.

The UDA Secretary General further welcomed the peaceful conduct of the Ol Kalou by-election, commending security agencies for maintaining law and order throughout the exercise. He praised Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen and Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo for their roles in ensuring a peaceful electoral process.

Omar concluded by urging Kenyans to embrace national unity after the by-election, stressing that elections should strengthen democracy rather than divide the country.

Quoting President William Ruto, he said political contests eventually come to an end, but the nation must always move forward together as one united and indivisible country.
