Kisumu Deputy Governor Matthew Owili Condemns Attack on Governors Orengo and Sifuna, Demands Swift Justice

 Kisumu Deputy Governor Dr. Matthew Owili has strongly condemned the violent attack against Siaya Governor James Orengo and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna at St. Stephen's ACK Cathedral in Kisumu, describing the incident as an assault on democracy, the rule of law and the sanctity of places of worship.

In a press statement issued on Monday, Dr. Owili said he was deeply shocked and saddened by the disruption and targeted assault, terming the incident an affront to the democratic values that Kenya has fought to uphold.

He noted that Kisumu has historically been regarded as a bastion of democracy, reminding Kenyans that many lives have been sacrificed in the struggle to expand democratic space and secure the freedoms enjoyed today.

"I shudder at the thought of us, the political class, destroying everything Baba, Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga, stood and fought for his entire life," Owili said, adding that the attack by armed goons inside a church represented one of the lowest moments for the nation.

The Deputy Governor emphasized that desecrating a house of worship and turning a place of peace into a scene of violence is unacceptable under any circumstances. He maintained that while political differences are legitimate in a democracy, violence, intimidation and hired thuggery have no place in public life.

Owili warned that such actions threaten to erode the democratic tolerance built over decades through sacrifice and national unity.

He called on security agencies to conduct a swift and thorough investigation, apprehend those responsible and ensure that everyone involved in organizing or carrying out the attack is brought to justice.

"We must reject this dangerous slide into lawlessness," he said.

The Deputy Governor urged political leaders and citizens alike to uphold peace, respect democratic institutions and safeguard places of worship from political violence, stressing that Kenya's democracy can only thrive through dialogue, tolerance and adherence to the rule of law.
