Kenya, Italy Sign New Security Pact to Boost Fight Against Crime

Kenya and Italy have strengthened their security partnership following the signing of a Letter of Intent aimed at enhancing cooperation in the prevention and combating of both domestic and transnational crime.

Speaking after the signing ceremony, Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration Kipchumba Murkomen said the agreement marks another milestone in the growing security collaboration between the two countries.

Murkomen said the partnership will improve intelligence sharing, capacity building, and joint efforts to address emerging security threats, reaffirming the government's commitment to safeguarding the country through international cooperation.

"We are strengthening cooperation with international partners to improve our response to both domestic and transnational crime. Together with my Italian counterpart, H.E. Matteo Piantedosi, we have signed a Letter of Intent to deepen cooperation between Kenya and Italy in preventing and combating crime," Murkomen said.

He noted that the agreement builds on the Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2023 between Italy's Carabinieri and Kenya's National Police Service, which has been instrumental in enhancing the capacity of Kenyan security agencies through training and benchmarking.

Murkomen added that the latest agreement comes as Kenya establishes the Nairobi Metropolitan Police Unit, a new initiative aimed at improving safety and security in Nairobi and its surrounding areas.

The signing ceremony was attended by Italy's Ambassador to Kenya, Dr. Vincenzo Del Monaco, Principal Secretary for Internal Security Dr. Raymond Omollo, Principal Secretary for Immigration and Citizen Services Dr. Belio Kipsang, and senior government officials from both Kenya and Italy.

The Interior Cabinet Secretary emphasized that the strengthened partnership reflects Kenya's continued commitment to fostering international cooperation in addressing evolving security challenges while enhancing the safety of its citizens.
