KCDF Awards KSh31.5 Million to Seven Youth-Led Green Innovations, Launches Expanded Young Innovators Challenge

The Kenya Community Development Foundation (KCDF) has awarded KSh31.5 million to seven youth-led enterprises and community organisations developing innovative solutions to Kenya's environmental challenges, marking the culmination of the third edition of the Young Environmentalist Innovation Challenge (YEIC). 

The seven winning projects were selected from more than 700 applications submitted nationwide following a rigorous evaluation process that assessed innovation, impact, sustainability and scalability. The supported initiatives focus on waste management, clean energy, sustainable agriculture, water access, affordable housing and circular economy solutions.  

Speaking during the awards ceremony, KCDF Executive Director Grace Maingi praised the creativity and determination of Kenya's young innovators, saying their ideas are being transformed into practical enterprises tackling waste, energy, agriculture and conservation challenges across the country. 

The winning innovations include Twende Green Ecocycle from Mombasa, Fibertext Green Paper Ltd from Bungoma, Queening Afrika from Nairobi, Bio Regen and Majik Water Technologies from Murang'a, Ecobora from Kajiado, and Ecobuild from Siaya. Their projects range from converting marine plastic waste into school furniture and producing biodegradable paper packaging to generating clean drinking water from atmospheric moisture and turning mining waste into eco-bricks.  

During the event, KCDF and the I&M Foundation also unveiled the next phase of the programme under a new identity, the Young Innovators Challenge (YIC). The rebranding broadens the initiative's focus beyond environmental conservation to support youth-led innovations addressing wider social, economic and development challenges. 
I&M Bank Interim CEO Kihara Maina said the Foundation is committed to supporting innovators by combining financial grants with mentorship, technical expertise and market linkages to help promising ideas grow into sustainable ventures. KCDF Board Vice Chair Gordon Odundo added that the partnership between KCDF and the I&M Foundation has significantly increased funding available to young innovators through a matching grant arrangement. 

Applications for the newly branded Young Innovators Challenge are now open through the KCDF website, providing another opportunity for young Kenyans to access funding, mentorship and networks to scale impactful innovations.
