Chief Conservator of Forests (CCF) Chief Executive Officer Alex Lemarkoko Calls for Greater Community Involvement to Achieve Kenya's 30% Tree Cover Target

The Conservator of Forests, Mr. Alex Lemarkoko, has underscored the importance of community participation, strong leadership and increased investment in forestry as Kenya works towards achieving its target of 30 percent national tree cover.

Speaking during an event, Lemarkoko said forestry has become increasingly central to Kenya's development agenda, noting that sustainable forest management plays a vital role in environmental conservation, climate resilience and economic growth.

He said the Kenya Forest Service (KFS) has witnessed significant success where community leaders and other stakeholders have taken an active role in implementing Participatory Forest Management Plans (PFMPs). According to him, empowering local leadership has strengthened community ownership of conservation initiatives and improved forest protection efforts.

Lemarkoko emphasized the need to integrate forestry with other sectors such as agriculture and livestock production, saying sustainable forest management contributes to broader national development objectives, including environmental protection, food security and even national security.

He noted that KFS is adopting a holistic approach that brings together government agencies, communities and development partners to ensure forestry initiatives deliver long-term environmental and socio-economic benefits.

The Conservator also called for increased financing and better prioritization of the forestry sector, arguing that forests make a significant contribution to Kenya's economy and should receive greater investment to support conservation and restoration programmes.

He further highlighted the importance of fencing restored forest areas to protect newly planted trees, encourage natural regeneration and enhance forest productivity.

Lemarkoko thanked the Government and stakeholders for supporting forestry programmes, expressing confidence that continued collaboration and sustained investment will accelerate Kenya's journey towards achieving its ambitious tree cover target while promoting sustainable development and environmental conservation.
