Concerned Citizens Network Alleges Healthcare Crisis at Mwingi Level 4 Hospital, Calls for Urgent Investigations

The Concerned Citizens Network has accused Mwingi Level 4 Hospital in Kitui County of failing to provide essential healthcare services, alleging widespread shortages of medical supplies, poor service delivery and corruption within the county's health sector.

In a statement accompanied by campaign materials, the group claimed that expectant mothers are being required to purchase delivery aid kits from private chemists before they can be admitted for childbirth. It also alleged that some patients are asked to make cash payments despite being registered under the Social Health Authority (SHA).

The network further claimed that patients are frequently referred to private facilities for X-rays, MRI scans and other diagnostic services due to a lack of equipment at the hospital. It also alleged that families are asked to make unreceipted cash payments for services such as postmortems and ambulance fuel.

The group directed its criticism at senior county health officials and called on the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the Ministry of Health to investigate the allegations and take appropriate action against anyone found responsible.

According to the Concerned Citizens Network, the reported challenges have undermined access to quality healthcare and placed an unnecessary financial burden on vulnerable patients, particularly expectant mothers.

The group urged the Kitui County Government to urgently address the concerns, improve the supply of essential medicines and equipment, strengthen accountability and restore public confidence in healthcare services.

The allegations have not been independently verified, and the Kitui County Government, Mwingi Level 4 Hospital management and the officials named had not publicly responded to the claims at the time of publication.
