University Student Leaders Call for Reflection, Urge Comrades to Shun June 25 Demonstration
University student leaders from across the country have called on comrades to observe the June 25 anniversary through reflection and prayers rather than participating in street demonstrations.
Speaking during a joint press briefing by serving and former student leaders, the leaders expressed heartfelt condolences to families who lost their loved ones during the 2024 and 2025 Gen Z protests, describing the deaths and injuries suffered during the demonstrations as a painful loss to the nation.
The student leaders said every life lost represented a dream cut short and an opportunity denied, while injuries sustained by young people had shattered the aspirations of many families.
“We convey our heartfelt condolences to families who lost their loved ones during the 2024 and 2025 Gen Z protests. Every death was a robbed chance of a livelihood, and every injury was a puncture to a big dream,” the leaders said.
The leaders urged university students and young people across the country to join grieving families in prayer and reflection as the nation marks the anniversary of the protests.
They strongly condemned individuals and political actors whom they accused of exploiting peaceful youth activities for personal and political interests, saying young people have continued to bear the consequences through loss of lives and destruction of property.
The student leaders cautioned comrades against being manipulated by politicians seeking to settle political scores through youth-led demonstrations, urging them to avoid activities that could lead to violence, destruction, and instability.
“We call upon our members to exercise caution and abstain from calls by politicians to participate in activities that may cause loss of lives, destruction of property, and undermine peace in Kenya,” the statement read.
The leaders encouraged students across universities and other institutions to commemorate the anniversary from their homes and campuses, particularly for those currently in session.
As a result, the student leadership declared that university comrades would not participate in street demonstrations scheduled for June 25, opting instead to use the day to reflect on the role and responsibility of young people in shaping the country's future.
The leaders concluded their address with the traditional student movement slogan, “Comrades Power, Comrades Riah,” while calling for unity, peace, and responsible engagement among the youth.
