Murkomen Hails Peaceful June 25 Demonstrations as Security Agencies Arrest 355 Suspects

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has commended Kenyans for maintaining peace during the June 25 demonstrations, saying the largely calm atmosphere witnessed across the country demonstrated political maturity and respect for constitutional rights.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the Cabinet Secretary said the demonstrations proceeded peacefully in many parts of the country, with no widespread cases of looting, vandalism, skirmishes, or injuries being reported.

Murkomen noted that families and friends of victims of previous protests, alongside members of the public, held peaceful processions in Nairobi and Mombasa, while most towns across the country continued with normal business activities.

He said the day proved that demonstrations conducted in accordance with the Constitution can coexist with peace and security, adding that the country should encourage such a political culture.

The Interior CS revealed that security agencies had acted on intelligence reports indicating that groups of suspected troublemakers were being transported to Nairobi to disrupt peace. As a result, security screening operations were mounted along major highways leading into the city to prevent possible chaos and protect businesses.

Despite the generally peaceful situation, Murkomen said some individuals attempted to commit crimes under the guise of demonstrations, leading to the arrest of 355 suspects across several counties.

Nairobi recorded the highest number of arrests with 161 cases, followed by Kajiado with 123 and Kiambu with 36. Additional arrests were made in Murang’a, Bungoma, Meru, Laikipia, and Machakos counties. The suspects are expected to face charges related to robbery, vandalism, obstruction of roads, and attempted theft.

The Cabinet Secretary also reported that an assistant chief from Kariti Sub-location in Murang’a County sustained injuries after being attacked by individuals attempting to erect a barricade in Kandara. He was treated and discharged in stable condition.

Murkomen praised security agencies for what he termed as professionalism, effective planning, and commitment to maintaining law and order during the demonstrations. He also commended journalists and media houses that provided responsible and accurate coverage of the events.

He urged Kenyans to continue safeguarding peace and stability, emphasizing that all citizens have a shared responsibility in protecting the country's future.Source: Statement by the Ministry of Interior and National Administration on the state of security following the June 25 demonstrations.
