Kangemi Ward’s growing concerns over disorder and public safety took center stage following a high-level meeting convened by the Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) of Westlands Sub-County, Mr. Mayabi, bringing together key stakeholders in the transport sector and local leadership.
Wanja Nyarari, who attended the meeting, said the engagement provided a critical platform to address long-standing challenges affecting the area, particularly those impacting matatu operations, businesses, and residents.
Matatu operators, led by Kariuki, Chair of KMO Sacco, Jack of Digital Luxury Sacco, and Chomba of KC Sacco, voiced frustrations over increasing road obstructions, disorganized transport activities, and a deteriorating operating environment. They noted that the situation has not only disrupted transport services but also posed risks to public safety and hindered economic activity.
Nyarari emphasized the central role of the DCC in maintaining order, citing the National Government Coordination Act 2013, which mandates the office to coordinate national government functions at the sub-county level and chair the Sub-County Security Committee. She noted that this responsibility places the DCC at the heart of restoring sanity and ensuring effective collaboration among stakeholders.
She further referenced the Public Order Act (Cap 56), highlighting the legal requirement to prevent obstruction of public roads and maintain public order, calling for strict enforcement to address the challenges raised.
Nyarari expressed appreciation to the DCC for convening the meeting and demonstrating commitment to resolving the issues through inclusive dialogue. She voiced optimism that the discussions would lead to practical solutions, improved enforcement of the law, and a more organized and secure environment for both businesses and residents.
“Kangemi must work, and it must work within the law,” she stated, underscoring the need for collective responsibility in restoring order and fostering sustainable development in the area.
