MD Kenya railways Philip Mainga Leads Talks With Bamburi Group to Expand Rail Cargo Transport and Regional Connectivity

Kenya Railways and Bamburi Cement have strengthened their long-standing partnership following high-level talks aimed at improving cargo transport efficiency and expanding regional rail connectivity.

The meeting, held between Kenya Railways Managing Director Philip Mainga and Bamburi Group CEO Geoffrey Ndugwa, focused on transport solutions that will enhance movement of raw materials and finished products while supporting industrial growth across the region.

Bamburi Group, which has operated for more than seven decades, continues to expand its reliance on rail transport as part of efforts to improve efficiency and reduce road congestion. Currently, the company operates up to 18 full cement trains every month from its Mombasa and Athi River plants through the railway network, translating to approximately 11,000 tonnes of cargo.

In addition, the company transports between 75,000 and 90,000 tonnes of clinker monthly from Mombasa using rail, alongside other raw materials and finished products destined for local and regional markets.
During the discussions, Kenya Railways outlined ongoing infrastructure projects aimed at enhancing freight movement and unlocking new economic opportunities. Among the key projects highlighted was the planned operationalization of the Gilgil–Nyahururu railway branch line, which is expected to commence within the next month.

The corporation also reaffirmed progress in the rehabilitation of the Voi–Taveta branch line, a strategic corridor expected to improve trade links between Kenya and Tanzania. The groundbreaking ceremony for the rehabilitation project was held on April 10, 2026.

According to Kenya Railways, the Voi–Taveta line will play a critical role in supporting Bamburi Group’s growing market in Tanzania by easing transportation of cement and clinker across the border.

The two institutions reiterated their commitment to maintaining strong collaboration aimed at expanding rail freight business, improving regional connectivity, and promoting sustainable industrial development for decades to come.

The renewed partnership comes at a time when Kenya continues to push for increased use of rail transport to lower logistics costs, reduce carbon emissions, and strengthen the country’s position as a regional trade and manufacturing hub.
