Government Confirms Emergency Response Following Deadly Fire at Utumishi Girls Academy in Gilgil



A tragic fire incident at Utumishi Girls Academy in Gilgil, Nakuru County, has left the nation in mourning after several students were feared dead while others sustained injuries, prompting an immediate government emergency response.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Government Spokesperson Hon. Dr. Isaac Mwaura expressed deep sorrow over the incident, describing it as a devastating tragedy that has shocked the country. The government conveyed condolences to families, parents, guardians, teachers, and students affected by the fire.

According to the statement, emergency response teams comprising officers from the National Police Service, Kenya Defence Forces, county disaster units, medical personnel, and fire response teams were swiftly deployed to contain the situation and assist victims

The injured students are reportedly receiving treatment at nearby medical facilities as authorities continue efforts to account for all learners and ensure their safety. Government officials are also on the ground coordinating rescue operations and offering support to affected families.

The government assured Kenyans that all available resources are being mobilized to manage the crisis professionally and efficiently. Authorities have further urged members of the public to avoid spreading unverified information and disturbing images on social media, warning that such content could intensify trauma for grieving families and interfere with ongoing rescue efforts.

Investigations into the cause of the fire are already underway, with the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Interior and National Administration, and relevant agencies working jointly to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and determine appropriate action.

As the nation grapples with the tragedy, the government called for unity and solidarity with the affected students, teachers, and families, promising to issue further updates through official communication channels as verified information becomes available.
