Ruto Launches Voi–Taveta Railway Revival as Kenya Railways MD Philip Mainga Graces Groundbreaking

President William Samoei Ruto today presided over the groundbreaking ceremony for the rehabilitation of the Voi–Taveta Railway Line, signaling the start of a transformative infrastructure project aimed at reviving a key transport corridor in the Coast region.
In a symbolic gesture to mark the commencement of the works, the Head of State unveiled the project plaque before tightening the first rail nut—an act that officially set construction in motion and underscored the government’s commitment to restoring the line.

The rehabilitation of the railway is expected to significantly enhance connectivity between Voi and Taveta, easing the movement of goods and passengers while strengthening trade and logistics within Taita Taveta County and across the broader region. The project is also poised to boost tourism and unlock new economic opportunities, particularly given Taveta’s strategic position near the Kenya–Tanzania border.
Speaking during the event, President Ruto reaffirmed his administration’s focus on investing in modern, efficient, and integrated transport systems as a catalyst for economic growth and regional development.

Kenya Railways Managing Director Philip Mainga was among senior government officials present at the ceremony, highlighting the importance of the project to the country’s rail infrastructure agenda.

Once complete, the Voi–Taveta Railway Line is expected to play a pivotal role in enhancing regional trade links and improving mobility, further positioning Kenya as a transport and logistics hub in East Africa.
