Police Warn Against Illegal Protests in Nairobi Ahead of Planned Fuel Price Demonstrations

The Nairobi Regional Police Commander, Issa Mohamud, has issued a stern warning to individuals and groups planning to participate in unlawful demonstrations within the city, stating that law enforcement will take firm action against any breach of the law.

Speaking ahead of the planned protests scheduled for Tuesday, April 21, 2026, Mohamud emphasized that while citizens have a constitutional right to assemble and express their grievances, such actions must strictly adhere to the law. He cautioned that any demonstrations held without proper authorization or that turn violent will not be tolerated.

The warning comes amid rising tensions over increasing fuel prices, which have sparked public outrage and calls for mass action across Nairobi. Organizers of the protests have vowed to mobilize large numbers of residents to take to the streets, demanding government intervention to address the high cost of living.

However, the police commander urged protestors to pursue peaceful and lawful means of engagement, noting that security agencies are on high alert to maintain order and protect lives and property.
“We will not allow any form of lawlessness in the city. Anyone found engaging in illegal activities under the guise of protests will face the full force of the law,” Mohamud said.

Authorities have also called on protest organizers to liaise with police and follow the required procedures, including notifying relevant offices in advance, to ensure that demonstrations remain peaceful and orderly.

The developments set the stage for a tense standoff between protestors and security agencies, as Nairobi braces for the planned demonstrations that could test the balance between civil liberties and public order.
