KISE Champions Inclusive Innovation with AI-Driven Solutions for Persons with Disabilities

The Kenya Institute of Special Education (KISE) has reaffirmed its position as a leading centre of excellence in special needs education, assessment, and rehabilitation, even as it pushes the boundaries of innovation through technology.

Speaking during a recent partner engagement visit, the Institute’s Director underscored the urgent need to bridge the gap between rapid technological advancement and the limited access to opportunities still faced by many persons with disabilities. He emphasized that while the digital era presents immense possibilities, inclusion must remain at the heart of innovation.

KISE highlighted its growing collaborations with global and local partners, including Huawei, AT4D, UNESCO, and Qhala. Among the key initiatives is the 2024 AI Hackathon, which aims to develop and scale inclusive, tech-driven solutions tailored to the needs of persons with disabilities.

The Director further reiterated the Institute’s commitment to locally designing and producing assistive devices powered by artificial intelligence and digital technologies. This approach, he noted, ensures that solutions are not only innovative but also affordable, accessible, and responsive to real-life challenges faced by users.

The visit brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including representatives from Huawei, AT4D, UNESCO, Qhala, the Signvrse team, and Kenya’s Ministry of ICT, highlighting the importance of multi-sector collaboration in advancing inclusive development.

Participants were taken through KISE’s holistic model, which integrates assessment, rehabilitation, digital learning, and assistive device production. The showcase demonstrated how the Institute is leveraging partnerships and innovation to transform lives and expand opportunities for persons with disabilities.
As KISE continues to strengthen its role in shaping inclusive education and technology in Kenya and beyond, its efforts stand as a powerful reminder that true progress lies in ensuring no one is left behind.
