DeckerMed Africa Trust and Lavington Rotary Club, Nairobi Champion Women’s Health with Lifesaving Medical Camp in Kibera
By Steve El Sabai
DeckerMed Africa Trust, in collaboration with the Lavington Rotary Club, Nairobi, today held a high-impact medical outreach at Kibera D.O Health Centre, offering vital healthcare services to underserved women and girls in Kibera and its surrounding areas.
The medical camp, themed “Neglected Women’s Diseases (NWD),” targeted conditions often overlooked in marginalized communities, including cervical and breast cancer, obstetric fistula, pelvic organ prolapse, endometriosis, and other chronic gynecological issues. Women also received free screenings for diabetes, hypertension, malaria, and HIV, along with general medical consultation and medication.
More than 400 women accessed lifesaving services, underscoring the pressing need for community-based, preventive healthcare. The outreach reflected the shared vision of DeckerMed Africa Trust and Lavington Rotary Club, Nairobi to prioritize women’s health through strategic collaboration and grassroots engagement.
Leading the initiative were Wambui Karanja, President of Lavington Rotary Club, Nairobi, and Esther Baraga, Director of Development at DeckerMed Africa Trust. Their partnership has repeatedly demonstrated the power of uniting development organizations and service clubs for sustainable public health solutions.
An important component of the camp was the Betty Lloyd Clinic, established in memory of the late Betty Lloyd, who lost her battle with cancer. The clinic, integrated into this medical drive, offered specialized breast and cervical cancer screenings, ensuring early detection for women who would otherwise have limited access to such services.
The human impact was best captured by Mama Elidah Akinyi, one of the day’s many beneficiaries, who expressed heartfelt thanks after receiving treatment and medication. “I’m so thankful to the organizers. I got the help I needed and walked away feeling better and hopeful,” she said.
The success of the camp was made possible through strong partnerships. Key supporters included Malibu Pharmacy Ltd, which donated essential drugs and medical supplies, Milele FM as the media partner, Africa Cancer Foundation, Essilor Luxottica, and Mr. and Miss World Kenya, all contributing to the event’s reach and effectiveness.
Local coordination was expertly managed by Linet Were, Nursing Officer Lead at Kibera D.O Health Centre, whose leadership ensured smooth service delivery and patient care.
“Our continued efforts alongside the Lavington Rotary Club, Nairobi reflect our commitment to scale what works and deliver lasting health solutions to the grassroots,” said Esther Baraga. “This partnership exemplifies how collective action can transform the health and dignity of women.”
This medical camp marks yet another milestone in DeckerMed’s mission to bring dignity, access, and healing to women across Kenya’s underserved communities.
